Leave No Trace is a conceptual art that is made possible by humans’ free movements with their every footstep. Dubbed as a product by UuDam Studio Slippers (U.S.S.), UuDam Tran Nguyen experiments with making an ephemeral artwork that only appears momentarily on sand, then disappears into the wind and ocean waves, only to reappears again with another human footstep. The artist creates beach slippers that generates sand bas-reliefs as they carry an imprinted message carved into the slippers’ soles. The message is Lao Tzu’s saying: “Good travelers leave no traces”. With each footstep, the slipper wearer stamps on any sandy beach or desert sand this temporary message. It is a repeating reminder to us that we need to be responsible when traveling, to leave the least harmful impact on nature, and be respectful to the culture of the place visited.
Born in Vietnam, currently lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City. UuDam Tran Nguyen works with different materials, focusing on combining photography, video, sculpture and performance with technology and new media.
