A fascinating cave temple, Phnom Chhnork makes for a great day trip out to the beautiful Kampot countryside. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, built in the 7th century with reddish orange bricks from the Funan era. Though it is small, it gives a magical atmosphere of being captured in time, as the cave has preserved its condition throughout the centuries.
From the outside, a passage of stone steps leads to the temple cave. You need to give a monk a small entry fee to enter. Elephants carved from stalactite frame the entrance to the temple.
To reach Phnom Chhnork, you need to navigate through a small stretch of rice paddies from Wat Ang Sdok. The markings and directions to the cave are easy to miss though, so it’s best to have a local guide with you to save any hassle.
