When it comes to ancient temples, Siem Reap isn’t the only place to find them. Eleven kilometres north of Battambang city, the ruins of Ek Phnom is a peaceful and beautiful site not to miss.
It was built in the 11th century, predating some of the iconic Angkor temples such as Angkor Wat and the Bayon. Though it sadly suffered from looting, the temple still has some impressive carvings, bas reliefs and statues. While small and worn down, that’s part of the charm of the temple which makes you feel like you’re discovering a lost temple.
The ancient Wat Ek Phnom temple sits behind the more recently built pagoda of the same name that welcomes local families during the holidays. The pagoda shines with bright colors. Next to it is a 28-meter-tall sitting statue of the Buddha, striking in white, an elegant addition to the pagoda grounds.
