What to Do in Ayutthaya:

  • Wat Mahathat Ayutthaya - The rustic brick place houses the Buddha’s relics and stays one of the most important temples in Ayutthaya. The chief of monk lived here, and major royal ceremonies took place here too.
  • Buddha Head Statue in Tree Trunk (in Wat Mahathat) - Legend has it that the sandstone Buddha head might have landed on tree roots during the fall of Ayutthaya. The roots have since magically grown around the statue.
  • Bang Pa-In Royal Palace - A fun mix of Thai, Chinese and European architecture mirrors Ayutthaya’s international relationship with the great powers of its time.
  • Ayothaya Floating Market - It’s not big in size, but the variety of Thai food, desserts and drinks doesn’t disappoint.
  • Wat Yai Chai Mongkol - Iconic row of Buddha statues in yellow robe around the mega stupa and the great Reclining Buddha statue make the temple a must-visit.
  • Wat Phra Si Sanphet - The official royal temple was the Ayutthaya’s equivalence of Wat Phra Kaew. The 3 main stupas house relics of 3 kings, and other 33 smaller ones hold traces of other royal members.
  • Wat Chai Wattanaram - Thai historians say the quirky Khmer-inspired temple might be the king’s way of celebrating his victory against the Khmer Kingdom.
  • Wat Phanan Choeng - The 19-metre tall golden Buddha statue here is said to have tears streaming down his face when Ayutthaya was falling apart.

Know before You Go: Like all temples and royal places in Thailand, you’ll have to cover your upper arms and legs (at least down to your knees).
