Explore the Unseen Temple & Secret Village in Lampang

★★★★★★★★★★

3.7

I did a day trip to the floating pagodas (aka sky temple) from Chiang Mai. The trip started around 5am. I was unsure about the itinerary and whether I would be with a small groups, but it ended up being a private tour with the guide and a driver. The guide started right away with showing photos of architecture and the history of northern Thailand while we were driving in the car with photos from his tablet. We stopped at a little village and visited a hidden little temple by the river, gave alms to a monk, and stopped to eat some local food (sausages and rice). We stopped at a viewpoint and walked around the top with some fog that came rolling through. We then stopped at another village that had coffee and honey products, but the area was closed for the day, so we moved on after walking through the village. We stopped at another temple on the way (I chose to do this over the option of the hot springs), and then had a 15min lunch that the guide had pre packed the night before since there was uncertainty if there would be any place open near the base of the pagodas. We had a quick lunch and then boarded the generic pick up truck with fashioned seats/benches in the back. If you are visiting the sky pagodas, this area is where you buy your ticket and then have to take the trucks to the top. Once at the top we climbed the stairs to the pagodas for a view. There’s only two staircases you can go up to for a view (I mistakenly thought there was a path that allowed you to walk along all the pagodas, nope, none existent). On the way back we stopped at another temple and then eventually returned and I was dropped off at my hotel by 5:30ish pm. Do I recommend it? I’m not sure. I got a little distracted with following some of the conversation and making sure I was understanding the plan for the day. I got a little distracted by the amount of photos that were being offered, while I appreciated having a handful of good photos at the end, I felt like it took away from initially being able to enjoy each stop and experience. I would never have visited these places without a guide and thought some of the villages and temples were neat to walk through, but I wish I would’ve known the plan prior to the journey. My main mission of booking the trip was because I wanted to go to the sky pagodas and couldn’t find any other options from Chiang Mai. While it is potentially possible to drive yourself, after being on the roads, I do not recommend it for anyone foreign to drive themselves as the roads are very curvy and very very steep. There was also discussion about add ons to the trip as the trip was ending or a push to book other days/trips with the guide
