Maeklong Railway through the Local Lens: TakeMeTour’s Review

Maeklong Railway market is definitely unique and worth a visit. Thais come here to buy quality seafood and fresh produce at good price. You can also explore other must-see attractions like Amphawa & Damnoen Saduak floating markets in just one day.

Maeklong Railway has been an everyday staple to Thais for over a century. It bridges the other side of Chao Phraya river in Bangkok (Thonburi) with the main fishing ports in Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram provinces. Besides buying heavy hauls of fresh and cheap seafood, locals actually commute to and from work on Maeklong Railway.

Maeklong Railway started out under a private enterprise. However, it fell under the Thai military during WWII and later became nationalized. Today, Maeklong railway runs from Wongwian Yai station (a short ride from BTS station with the same name) to Maeklong station. The route is made up from two separate lines (Wongwian Yai - Mahachai & Ban Laem - Maeklong). To ride from one end to the other, you will have to hop off, take a ferry across Ta Chin river and hop on another train.

Maeklong Railway’s major claim to fame is the Maeklong Umbrella Market. Literally ‘Umbrella Close Market’ in Thai, the fresh market does live up to its name. Rows of huge sun shades with stalls of fresh produce are right along both sides of the railway. Every time the train comes, the vendors close their umbrellas and pull everything away in a split second - making the iconic picture you might have seen several times. When the train is gone, everything goes right back into place.
