Chiang Mai is a land of mountains, forests, and waterfalls. For us Thais, the Northern city is our go-to escape. We couldn’t ask for a better place to relax and go on an adventure at the same time. Among our favorite places in Chiang Mai are the 100-meter-tall Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls. Even more than swimming, we love climbing Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls.

Yes, you can climb them. With the limestone-coated white rocks, you can step and hold onto their sticky surface while climbing. In a more difficult spot, rope is also provided, so you won’t slip. The waterfalls are surrounded by greenery and there’s a lot of water year round, so there’s no bad time to visit.

1. Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls Tour

If you want to save your evening for street food hopping, consider making Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls your only destination and return to Chiang Mai Old City area in the afternoon.

2. Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls Tour with Ethical Elephant Sanctuary

Chiang Dao Cave amazed us with more than stalactites and stalagmites. The limestone cave is located beneath Thailand’s third largest mountain, which is also considered one of the holiest mountains for Chiang Mai locals. Legend has it that Chiang Dao Cave is the gathering place of all ghosts and spirits in Chiang Mai. We couldn’t help feeling the chill as we followed our local friend through the dimly lit cavern dotted with small shrines and Buddha statues.

If you’re into both nature and spirituality, visiting Chiang Dao Cave and Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls in one day is an interesting idea. 

4. Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls Tour with Local Farm, Lunch at Mae Ngat Dam, and Teakwood Temple 

There are times when we want to slow down and relax right after an adventure. Not too far from Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls are pretty places where we can do just that. Depending on the season, we can visit different farms and watch the farmers go about their business. Then drive a bit further for lakeside local lunch at Mae Ngat Dam and Reservoir.

After delicious lunch with a view, let’s head back to the city area. A beautiful teakwood temple is waiting for us. It’s never crowded and we love how we never feel like sardines in a can there. 

Climbing up and cooling down at Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls is definitely one of our favorite things to do in Chiang Mai since it’s easy to combine with other activities for a day trip.
