Popular Tours | Amphawa Floating Market and Maeklong Railway Market

The Maeklong Railway has been an everyday staple to Thais for over a century. It bridges the other side of Chao Phraya River in Bangkok (Thonburi) with the main fishing ports in Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram provinces. Besides buying heavy hauls of fresh and cheap seafood, locals actually commute to and from work daily on the Maeklong Railway.

Maeklong Railway actually started out under a private enterprise. However, it fell under the Thai military during WWII and later became nationalized. Today, Maeklong Railway runs from Wongwian Yai station (a short ride from BTS station with the same name) to Maeklong Station. The route is made up of two separate lines (Wongwian Yai - Mahachai & Ban Laem - Maeklong). To ride from one end to the other, you will have to hop off, take a ferry across Tha Chin river and hop on another train.

Perhaps Maeklong Railway’s major claim to fame, however, is the Maeklong Railway Market. Called “Talad Rom Hub” in Thai, or literally, “Folding Umbrella Market”, the fresh market does live up to its name. Rows and rows of huge “umbrellas” or sun shades with stalls of fresh produce sit right along both sides of the railway. Every time the train comes, it becomes a one-of-a-kind highlight the market is known for. The umbrellas fold and the vendors pull everything away in a split second - making it the iconic picture you might have seen several times. When the train is gone, everything goes right back into place! Other than the trains running through the market, you’re sure to find fresh vegetables and fruits, meats, seafood, Thai desserts, and even a few souvenirs to take home!
